Newborns have limited eyesight. They cannot really see color, their focus distance is restricted to 8-10 inches, and everything is upside-down. As they develop, though, one of the first things they begin to pick out is contrast. Not only that, they like contrast. As a result, Rosalie has found her first favorite toy. Our friend Meg brought us this lovely harlequin-style figure (made of Egyptian cotton), and when we hold it about a foot in front of Rosalie and move it around slowly, she follows it with her eyes and head. It may not seem like much, but to first-time parents watching every little blink, twitch, and gurgle, this qualifies as a big deal. Thanks Meg!
